Program Overview

Adult Education at Guadalupe School is a year round program that provides English language instruction that is deeply contextualized within daily life. Examples of real-life language skills include: workplace readiness; written and telephone messages to teachers, doctors, landlords; on-line research of jobs or rental properties; map reading and directional language; understanding graphs and charts, numbers, prices and sizes; and making and keeping appointments.

Annually, over 300 students receive intensive counseling and individualized language instruction. Every student receives: integrated civics; curricular alignment with national English Language Proficiency Standards; six hours of direct instruction per week; and six additional hours available for optional computer assisted language learning. Every student can have upon request: US Citizenship exam preparation, Digital Literacy, vocational scaffolding courses, and Family Literacy courses.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Maria is one of students who has greatly benefitted from her time as a student in our Adult Education program. Maria is the mother of three and immigrated to the United States from Mexico. Since starting at Guadalupe, she has successfully passed her US Citizenship Test and has received her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. Maria continues to improve her English through coursework at Guadalupe and with her new professional certification, can actively pursue a career as a CNA. Maria says, "I always have a wonderful time when I am at Guadalupe. I come to class, have conversations, and never feel stress. I want to say thanks to Guadalupe School and all the staff because they dedicated time inside and outside of class to teach the course and rovided extra study sessions to prepare students for the final exam."
