Program Overview
Literacy Works trains tutors and teachers at community-based adult learning programs throughout Chicago. Currently, ourstate has suspended funding for these programs because of a budget impasse. As a result, many are closing or cutting services. To help students from affected agencies practice/learn new skills, Literacy Works will coordinate learning opportunities in public libraries. Beginning in early 2016, we will be in the Rogers Park and Albany Park branches of the library. Trained volunteers will be available two days per week at each branch to work with learners on speaking English and/or practicing reading, writing, and math. We may also be able to match learners with a tutor. This is a drop-in program for anyone interested in improving their skills. Simply show up in the library and let the librarian know you are there for Literacy Works' services. Hours of operation will be available on our website, litworks.org, before the end of the year. You can also call (773) 387-5902.

N/AStudent and Volunteer Success Stories
Quote from a volunteer tutor trained by Literacy Works: "I have learned how important literacy truly is and how each and every person, no matter the age, the circumstance, the gender, the disability - no matter what - every single person deserves the chance to learn and grow in knowledge. I have learned that I truly enjoy helping people, empowering individuals, and giving them the confidence and encouragement that they can do anything."
