Program Overview

Loudoun Literacy Council offers a robust Adult Literacy Program which includes year-round instruction in ESOL/ELL from beginner to advanced levels. Our FREE 12-week sessions meet once a week at various locations in the County.

We offer private tutoring and one-on-one tutoring for GED and Citizenship preparation as well as workshops in Financial Literacy and Health Literacy.

Our growing School Success Program partners with over 26 public schools providing resources for parents with very little English so that they can communicate with teachers and navigate online portals in the school system.

Our Jobsite Literacy Program partners with local businesses to teach English to their employees.

All our classes are taught by trained, volunteer teachers.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

My name is Fatma. It is such an honor to be here tonight and tell my story. I am originally from Istanbul. I came to the United States ten months ago to live with my son and granddaughter. I wanted to be able to help them and learn about American culture. I also want to share my culture and history. I have studied ceramic, glass, and tile art at Istanbul University.

Most importantly though, I know that to communicate with my granddaughter and everyone else, I need to learn English. My journey to learn English began by visiting the library and attending the conversational classes at Gum Spring Library. I saw a flyer for Loudoun Literacy Council at the information desk and immediately registered for an ELL class. I have attended the spring and summer sessions and I am currently taking an advanced class this fall. Loudoun Literacy’s English classes are very enjoyable.

By learning English, I am not only able to communicate with my family, especially my granddaughter, but I also get to spread my love of art. I have offered workshops on Turkish art called, Ebru. In the future, I would love to continue offering art programs for the community.

I can’t thank Loudoun Literacy Council enough for being so amazing, wonderful, and helpful to me. I am especially thankful to my teachers. They have given me confidence. I smile now. I am so thankful and feel so happy because I can understand what others are saying and I am able to explain myself!

I love living in Loudoun County because people are very helpful and kind. Every day I get to meet wonderful people and make new friends. Loudoun County feels like a second home to me. Thank you!
