Program Overview

The Family Literacy Academy (FLA) is a program offered by Broward Community Schools to meet the diverse needs of adult students enrolled in Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Educational Development (GED) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. The Family Literacy Academy assists adult students with their life-long goals of being successful students, workers, parents, and citizens. As academy members, adult students are given the opportunity to participate in training workshops on a variety of subjects that are important to them and their family members. Also, adult students and their children interact with each other during fun literacy activities and events based on the academic needs and interests of the children. When necessary, academy members will be referred to community organizations that assist with social services that include: food, clothing, shelter, and child screenings.
