Chatham Literacy

Program Overview

Chatham Literacy serves adults who are looking to: (1) improve their basic education and/or prepare for and attain their GED (High School diploma equivalent) because they may have dropped out of school before ever having achieved a high school diploma; (2) improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills because English is often their second language; (3) prepare for and attain their U.S. Citizenship because they have immigrated to the U.S. from Latin America or other regions of the world; and (4) improve their job and promotion prospects because they need to better understand soft skills requirements and norms in today's workplace.

Currently, the majority of services are provided to those living in North Chatham, Pittsboro, and Siler City at convenient locations, such as: Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) in Pittsboro and Siler City, Galloway Ridge at Fearrington, Carolina Meadows, Nature Trail, Western Chatham Senior Center, Western Chatham Food Pantry, churches, libraries, and other public locations throughout the County.

"I knew that I could not read but most people didn't know. But it was very tough not knowing how to read. Work orders, permission slips, safety tests all required reading. I discussed the problem with my wife and she said, "I will call Chatham County Community College tomorrow."

The College made an appointment for testing. The College [referred me to Chatham Literacy] and I was assigned two tutors. I looked forward to Mondays and Fridays when I met with my tutors. They are two very nice women who are good teachers. I was soon reading and writing independently. Now, I can read signs, bill boards, and I am able to read simple books, my work orders, menus, and some newspapers.

This accomplishment has made a difference in my life and I am still learning."
