Program Overview

The Pelican Community Center provides a personalized and unique experience for students with weekly English classes and conversational Spanish classes. Our goal is to serve students to achieve independence and empowerment through literacy.
Our objective was to develop a curriculum for improving the confidence and competence of those who lack these skills.
The development of a new curriculum dedicated to our students, who are laborers and workers, as well as some who are simply unemployed, due to their inability to speak English, that is essential. A significant amount of the families we serve are at the poverty level. The language barrier is a main factor that
limits the opportunity for employment. A secondary factor is caused by the long waiting period for obtaining work permits, social security numbers, etc. Before opening the center for English lessons, much research began for the development of a successful alternative curriculum that is specifically designed for low level literacy (written or spoken). In other words, for individuals who are currently in the workforce now, and need "survival English". We provide our classes in the mornings and evenings to benefit individuals who are currently working or have obligations to their families during the day. Our classes are presented in a relaxed and welcoming environment, so that if you miss a class, you can always rejoin and begin again.
