Program Overview
Our GreenSTEAM program typically targets children and youth in lower income communities.
GreenSTEAM delivers STEAM-based learning. The program is currently delivered at partner organization sites, e.g. Boys and Girls Clubs of PBC. With funding support and/or in partnership with the City of Greenacres, we will be able to deliver our GreenSTEAM after-school program at the City's Community Center.
With positive youth engagement and career exploration, we focus on building upon a youth's strengths, foster positive relationships, and build their leadership potential. Our program model is based on providing youth with access to educational opportunities that may not be afforded and/or affordable for this target audience.
Currently, schools in lower-income areas are often not provided with extensive educational opportunities, particularly in STEAM disciplines. Therefore, GreenSTEAM is a resource to meet this need, offering well-defined outcomes and STEAM-based project solutions, delivered in an afterschool setting. GreenSTEAM offers a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. We focus on problem solving, applied logic, technological reasoning, and critical thinking.
GreenSTEAM includes a focus on ongoing environmental sustainability.
Cost Info
GreenSTEAM is funded by foundations, corporations and after-school program administrators. The program is delivered at no cost to attendees, usually via Boys & Girls Clubs, Community Centers, and similar agencies/facilities.Student and Volunteer Success Stories
The program is typically delivered over 10 months: 4-week cycles; 2 lessons/week, per group; 1 hour/lesson. Each cycle typically includes 15 participants, generally middle school age. After each 4-week cycle, we sign up a new group. In total, we would provide 80 classes to an estimated 300 participants. Upon completion of 8 modules and completion workbook, participants complete a test or questionnaire. Passing the test qualifies the participant to receive a certificate at a formal ceremony for their families/friends to attend.
Educational trips: e.g. visit a working food farm and greenhouse in Loxahatchee; learn about nature and ecosystems with a trip to the Arthur R. Marshall Refuge.
GreenSTEAM project topics: clean water, wind power, hydroponic food crop systems, CO2, nutrition, soil, erosion, and garden/food management. A farmer's market workshop may include learning about budgets, marketing, sales, money management, and related business topics. All workshops are delivered indoors or outdoors depending on the project topic, and weather.
