Program Overview

CHSC's Learning Center will provide Northeast Ohioans who are Deaf or who have hearing loss to receive the assistance and training they need to become self-sufficient and employable despite their communication challenges. This will be achieved through uniquely researched and developed curriculum that addresses language and literacy, independent living, and job-readiness skills. While program participants may have completed similar programs that address these skill-sets, they frequently require extended/additional instruction to raise their skill levels. This is primarily due to the fact that individuals who are Deaf or who have hearing loss use American Sign Language as their primary language and cannot communicate in the Standard English that similar programs use to promote and conduct their programs. Subsequently, individuals who are Deaf or who have hearing loss are unaware of these programs/services, or do not have adequate communication successfully participate in programs. CHSC's staff has the expertise and experience to help reduce these disparities by using the essential communication modalities.
