Program Overview
Literacy Volunteers of Kent County is a volunteer organization teaching adults basic literacy and English as a Second Language. LVKC matches students with tutors to meet on a one-to-one basis. The tutoring is free to the students. Students do pay a $20 registration fee at the time of the assessment; this is to cover the cost of assessment materials.
To register with Literacy Volunteers, students must complete
an intake form with information like education, employment status, and tutor preference. The program accepts students who are 18 or older, are non-readers or reading at or below the sixth-grade level, or who have little or no understanding of the English language. The program will also accept students between the ages of 16 and 18 who are not currently enrolled in a traditional school setting and who need help with reading and/or obtaining a high school credential. Those students, under age 18, will be required to bring a parent or guardian to the initial interview and the parent/guardian will be required to provide a picture ID to the interviewer and sign the initial intake form.Based on the availability given on this form, the program director will match a student with a tutor. The more times a student shows he/she can meet, the better chance of being matched with a tutor. There is a waiting list for students. When a tutor becomes available, the student is contacted to set up a meeting with an evaluator to
complete some paperwork and assess the student's English skills.
