Program Overview
LVI engages in a variety of programming on behalf of staff, tutors and learners. Through our Resource and Referral Center we recruit andrefer to local literacy programs tutors and students and maintain an up-to-date Volunteer Directory on our web site of programs, with a map showing location, needs and services. LVI also conducts through the Center a spring On the Road to Literacy Conference and a fall New Readers for New Life Conference.
In National Service, LVI has been a leader in the field having
sponsored six VISTA and AmeriCorps programs that in the past twenty-five years have engaged over 1,000 individuals in education activities in over 150 host sites that included Head Start Centers, elementary schools, high schools, and community, faith and agency-based adult education programs. Our current VOCAL program had 39 members this
past year who served at 24 locations.
LVI also works correctional education and sponsors a volunteer-based tutoring program known as Jump Start which provides one-to-one tutoring for incarcerated young adults.
As a statewide organization LVI is also involved in a
variety of public awareness and advocacy activities to make people more conscious of the literacy needs of people right in their communities and stimulate interest in volunteering.
