Re: Letter of Support
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am honored to submit this letter in support of the collaborative partnership between LaPorte Community Schools and Indiana University South Bend. The Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships, and the Titan Success Center in Academic Affairs all value the meaningful collaboration with our K12 partners.
For over a decade, I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Mario Rosa in my role as Recruitment/Retention Counselor for Latinx and other underrepresented and historically underserved student populations at IU South Bend. We have often worked together to support Latino high school students and their parents, many of whom prefer Spanish as their language of choice for questions and concerns regarding college going processes and information. We have supported families through the application and financial aid processes, and with choosing the best fit for their unique student's needs. Additionally, I have joined Mario and LaPorte Community Schools in their community outreach presentations. Most recently, Mario hosted a medical career/fields information night for parents featuring college students, alumni, and professionals in the community. Afterwards, I was able to share information about IU South Bend and the majors and career areas that we offer. Unfortunately, the Covid pandemic has limited this type of engagement for the past two years. Each year we welcome more LaPorte students who attend and ultimately graduate from IUSB. We were able to return to on-campus classes for Fall 2021 and I was excited to welcome a cohort of 12 students from LaPorte and the surrounding area. These students are active and engaged across campus in the Honors Program, the Latino Student Union, and for those that chose to move on campus this spring, in Residence Life.Titan Success Center 1700 Mishawaka Ave., P.O. In the future, as we continue to strive to navigate the new normal, we plan to further our joint efforts to promote higher education in norther Indiana through our bi-annual Multicultural Student Showcase Days, events that are designed to address culturally specific needs and concerns of diverse communities across the state. Finally, as a member of the Dwyer College of Health Sciences Inclusive Action Advisory Council which works in support of and in conjunction with the Board of Health of Saint Joseph County declaration that racism is a public health crisis in Saint Joseph County, I look forward to the continued partnership with Mr. Rosa and the LaPorte community to address health, educational, economic, and similar disparities throughout our service region. Representation matters and Mr. Rosas is leading by example to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality educational experience.
Respectfully,
Cynthia A. Murphy
