Program Overview

The GiGi's Playhouse 1:1 Literacy Tutoring Program uses a methodology with documented success based on research by professionals in the field. The ability to read opens doors for individuals with Down syndrome in the workplace, schools and the community. Developing reading skills also leads to improvements in speech and language development, auditory perceptual skills and working memory function. Our goal is to foster a love for reading and provide an opportunity to develop and master skills, all while building a positive relationship with our volunteer tutors. Trained tutors work at the level of the individual, continually challenging and encouraging him/her to reach their Best of All. Students can start in our program as early as age 3 or any year after that. It's never too late to start! Weekly lessons last 45-60 minutes for 10-15 weeks at a time. Family members attend each tutoring session and leave with practical activities to continue the learning at home.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Our one-on-one literacy program has made an impact in the lives of some of our participants. A few of our parents shared their recent experiences with their child's tutor.

“Colin had an amazing experience with Nicole as his literacy tutor. She spent the first session getting to know his personality and motivations, in addition to his reading level. We discussed our priorities for the sessions, including a special focus on increasing his comprehension. Colin is a great reader but understanding and discussing what he has read and staying focused are both huge challenges for him. Nicole pulled together a whole assortment of games that incorporated movement, visuals and motivating rewards to keep him excited and engaged during the entire session. Her dedication as a tutor was incredible and she really made a difference for Colin! We are so appreciative of Nicole and all tutors that are part of the GiGi's family."

“I love seeing my son come for purposeful play for his tutoring. He enjoys the time with his tutor as she creates obstacle courses for him to burn off energy while improving his literacy skills. Amazing!"

“My daughter's tutor believes in her. That's so important! She knows she can achieve the goal that day as the tutor sets her up for success. This has been such a positive experience for us. We love GiGi's Playhouse!"
