Program Overview

Our Summer of Joy and Learning Program is an afterschool literacy and numeracy instruction serving Title I pre-k students and their families. All children attending Summer of Joy and Learning Program reside in Spanish-speaking households with a total income below the poverty threshold (FARMS eligible). Most of the children are recent arrivals to schooling in the US, many have had little to no formal schooling, or at best, have experienced interrupted schooling. Their parents invest their hopes and dreams in their child's educational futures, because they also lacked formal schooling. Supporting their children with English-language school work is difficult, they seek structured programs to help close the learning gap for their children. This program will not only provide specialized teaching and learning for students, but educators will also support learning within the children's homes.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

I can't begin to tell you enough how much I appreciate you and Jen. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Jackson's disability leading me to Dr. Varia, Dr. Varia leading me to ASDEC and ASDEC leading me to you and Jen. You both are in the forefront making changes directly with the children (and parents!) What a difference you're making so many lives. That is a hell of a legacy. Thank you!

"Our son Adam is bright, dyslexic, and dysgraphic. We've had a couple lucky breaks in helping him with his learning differences. One of them was his attendance at the ASDEC summer program after his 1st grade year. ASDEC is special in that your child will work one-on-one with a certified language therapist. Your child will receive instruction that is tailored for him; her progress is based on her understanding of material, not the group's mastery of material."
