Angels of Action

Program Overview

Angels of Action has the following two literacy programs:

Literacy in Action is an income eligible after school tutoring program designed for children in grades K-12. Assessment and tutoring services are provided by a trained volunteer in a dedicated setting.

Rock the Crock is a 12-week interactive cooking and family literacy program focused on increasing family communication, family engagement, and cooking skills through weekly crockpot meals. Rock the Crock utilizes "Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing" and incorporates the five protective factors as its literacy resource, encouraging early literacy within and throughout the family unit. Through this program, 50 families receive weekly Crock-Pot meal kits (ingredients) in addition to a step-by-step menu and family literacy activities. A coordinating video is available through both Facebook and our website that goes through each step of the cooking process, as well as presents some of the Talking is Teaching prompts and tips. Families then participate in an online forum where they have an opportunity to talk about their family engagement, meal prep and turnout, and receive the support of other families and Rock the Crock program instructors.The first 8 weeks of the program are focused on preparing and equipping families and the last 4 weeks of the program are focused on independence and empowering families to apply what they have learned. The Rock the Crock program runs three times throughout the year, with new families for each round.
