Sacred Heart Center offers an offers Adult Education Initiative that encompasses our Family Literacy/ESL program, our GED Preparation program in Spanish, basic computer classes in Spanish, and Citizenship classes. We also offer basic Spanish Literacy tutoring, bilingual summer camp for children, a Latino Leadership Institute that encourages civic engagement, a College and Career Bound program that is dedicated to helping 9-12 grade first generation Latinos making and fulfilling a higher education plan, a school enrichment program in the evenings for children 4 to 12 years old, a weekly after school program for high school students that are recently arrived to the US, and a new Spanish class program that just began in February for adults. Furthermore, as part of our Community Hub work, we partner with other organizations to improve the lives of Spanish-speaking members of our community by providing a variety of health and human services at our location. Last fiscal year we had a total of over 600 adults, children, and youth in our core educational programs, and we served over 7,700 people through our Community Hub work.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

A specific example of the impact of our programs is exemplified through Shadya's story. Shadya, from Honduras, was able to obtain her GED certificate thanks to her classes and tutorials at Sacred Heart Center, as well as her own hard work and dedication to finish her studies. She is a single mother who often had a hard time figuring out who could watch her 2 children, but it wasn't a large enough obstacle for her because she was still able to aspire and get her GED certificate. While she wasn't working, Shadya took advantage of taking English classes in the morning while one of her children was in her own school-readiness program, and she also took GED preparation classes in the evenings. In addition to her classes, she also attended many tutorials that we offer to provide additional support to our students, until she was able to pass the tests and acquire her GED. She is a role model for her daughters, thanks to her responsibility and dedication.
