Program Overview

Students from PreK-12th grade meet with a tutor one-on-one every Saturday morning during the school year to provide targeted, individualized support in English and math. During each 2.5 hour tutoring session, students eat breakfast with their tutors, read out loud, and work through packets of mathematic computations and problem-solving. Students also receive language practice in their native tongue and 10 books for their home library to build confidence in native language literacy and be able to practice at home with their parents.

The English as a Second Language and Computer Literacy Classes are offered to family members increase parents' skills for navigating the school and work environments, with a focus on conversational English and basic understanding of computers, emailing, and navigating the internet. The classes also teach parents the tutoring methods used and how to replicate them at home so that they are empowered to help their child succeed. For example, parents completing financial aid applications, such as FAFSA, are encouraged to attend the computer classes so that they can learn to complete the forms online. These programs work in concert to encourage a college-going culture from a young age and provide parents with the resources they need to not only support their children but also reach their own potential.

While several of the program services are designed for the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community, the Latino Student Fund does not discriminate on the basis of race, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, military/veteran status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state or local law in any of its programs and provides equal access to all individuals.
