Program Overview

Standing in the Gap is reaching out to enhance the lives of those in our community by assisting in the development of basic educational reading and writing skills. We are in rural Marshall County, Mississippi; and although our public-school graduation rate is 90%, the graduating classes over the years have shrunken greatly.

Standing in the Gap began and is rooted in community service to enhance positive life choices and promote life chances. After surveying parents, literacy is a topic that is most often chosen as a need for them. There is not a structured program operating in the vicinity and Standing in the Gap currently serves as mentors by partnering with four schools focused on grades 5th-12th.

With improved reading skills, young adults and adults will be encouraged to enroll, or transition into other educational, technical, and skilled trade programs to create a positive life for their family, finances, and impact the community through self-sufficiency.
