Program Overview

Summer Reading Everywhere events are Literacy Inc.'s community reading programs led by our staff or trained VIPs (Very Involved Parents who undergo training to be reading ambassadors in their communities). They take place in libraries and community gathering places such as lobbies, parks, and pools. A major component of the Summer Reading Everywhere events is Reading on the Rails, which kicks of the summer programs. Reading on the Rails gathers families at the NY Transit Museum for lunch and workshops following a read aloud on the subway as they travel from their respective neighborhoods. Summer Reading Everywhere exemplifies the name of the program as the program events emphasize the habit of reading in any space.

The program will begin in July 1st with the Reading on the Rails event. This kick off event will be followed by approximately 60 Reading Everywhere events and fairs each month (July and August) with the Summer Programming ending on August 31st.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"I was both pleasantly surprised and reassured that literacy was alive and well in my community when I saw the LINC parents stream into Inwood Park along with their children and sit quietly, listening to me read my book. Everyone stayed afterwards to join in the arts activities that followed the book reading. There were many comments from the children as well as the parents. They were so thrilled to have brought their children to this summer reading event, and were looking forward to the other readings in the park.

Kudos to the LINC organization for making these readings possible and showing all of us that reading and love of books is something that should be encouraged and supported, not only during the school year, but year round." Ada N. Letelier, Inwood Author
