Program Overview

The Literacy Center (TLC) helps adults with basic literacy needs and ESOL adults learning to speak, write and read English. TLC has periodicals, books, CDs, DVDs and online language learning platforms. As part of the Miller Business Center at MCPL, TLC offers bi-lingual career and school counseling, job readiness, resources for business support, networking and connections to business organizations.

TLC is staffed by bi-lingual librarians and assistants who help patrons apply for library cards, borrow materials, fill out applications and forms or read instructions, register for programs for themselves and their children, become computer literate, prepare for citizenship interviews and arrange one-on-one tutoring with Literacy Suffolk.

TLC offers basic and intermediate ESOL classes, English conversation groups, writing & reading comprehension workshops for ESOL students, citizenship preparation, GRASP, bi-lingual computer classes and Mujeres Latinas, a library group for Spanish speaking women and their families, linking library services with community resources through presentations, activities and events.

All Literacy Center programs and resources are available to the 66,000 residents of the Middle Country Central School District. Residents from outside the district may participate in basic ESOL classes, conversation groups, career counseling sessions, job readiness and networking programs, citizenship preparation and GRASP classes. Anyone may use the Literacy Center materials and online resources and receive assistance from the Literacy Center and other library staff members when visiting the Middle Country Public Library. Materials may be borrowed by any Suffolk or Nassau county library card holder.
