The Opening Word is a literacy program which teaches the English language and job readiness skills to immigrant women on Long Island, a population which is often underserved, undereducated, and/or underemployed.

I was attending the university in my country because I wanted to become a lawyer. But I was told that it was not safe for me and my children to remain in my country. So I had to leave the university with only one year remaining to receive my law degree. I came to the US 10 years ago. In order to support myself and my family I cleaned houses and worked in a beauty salon. When my employer died I lost my job. I knew if I wanted a better life, I needed to learn English. I learned about the Opening Word in my church bulletin. I love this program and I enjoy learning a new language from my wonderful teachers. My dream is to continue my studies here and acquire an excellent job, one that is challenging.
