Program Overview
World Relief's ESL/Literacy program is a three-phase process, each tailored to the refugee students' needs.
1. Basic language acquisition and literacy: Some students are highly educated in their own language and simply need to focus on language learning. Others don't know how to hold a pencil. Groups must be established with different instructors in order to meet the students where they are. The language group focuses on developing vocabulary and grammar skills. The literacy group learns the English alphabet and practices writing it as they speak it.
2. Citizenship: This phase is content-based instruction where students practice English while learning American history and civics needed to pass the citizenship exam. Worksheets, tests, and practice citizenship interviews are all included in this phase.
3. Job interview: In this phase, students learn the specific vocabulary involved in filling out job applications and practice answering the questions that are typical in a job interview.

"Every refugee comes to America with a story and when we walk with them we become a part of that story ... walking with them through language acquisition, seeing them begin to understand and with hard work eventually even gain citizenship ... It's like I get to be a part of someone's American dream." -- Russell Chun ESL teacher/volunteer
