Program Overview

YWCA Southeast Wisconsin (YWCA SEW) is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. For 125 years, YWCA has been committed to facilitating access to opportunity for low income, underserved individuals. One of the core ways YWCA SEW helps individuals access opportunity is through improvement of their academic abilities. YWCA SEW offers several programs to meet learning needs: GED preparation and testing, and Department of Public Instruction approved 5.09 High School Equivalency program (5.09 HSED). The GED program focuses on individual student strengths and the specific subjects and test questions that challenge them. Services include onsite GED testing, a mix of one-on-one tutoring and classroom-style instruction, basic computer and keyboarding skills courses, and financial education. 5.09 HSED is workforce-focused, using real-life applications as often as possible. Students attend classes for 12 hours per week over 20 weeks. Services include financial education, remediation classes with one-on-one instruction, and the National Career Readiness Certificate (a second credential that demonstrates workforce skills). 5.09 HSED classes are offered in Milwaukee and Racine.
